Phil Wilcox

Baritone

Animateur

Choral Director

Phil Wilcox is a portfolio career musician,

a uniquely versatile artist skilled in navigating the worlds of opera, concert performance, choral direction and animateurship.

In his work as an opera singer, Phil is often praised for the quality of his characterful baritone, the detail in his acting

and the energy of his theatrical timing.

He is regularly engaged as a concert soloist

and professional chorister, and his advanced

musicianship makes him an asset to

recording sessions and R&D projects.

Phil conducts a number of choirs and is a

passionate educator and workshop leader.

Opera performance

Performing in operas brings together my love for music and passion for storytelling. I thrive in the process of creating a living, breathing character to inhabit the theatrical world of the production and find particular fulfilment in making people laugh.

I have performed roles from much loved operas such as The Marriage of Figaro, Hansel and Gretel and La Bohéme, and have also created new roles for contemporary pieces.

You'll find lots of pictures on the media page.

Choral direction

I am musical director of the wonderful community choir, Fleet Singers, and several choirs for Music in Offices. I have previously founded choirs for Leeds Beckett University and Ravensbourne College.

My choirs sing a variety of repertoire from Mozart's Requiem and Handel's Messiah to hits from the shows and contemporary pop arrangements.

You can read some of my thoughts on choral direction here.

Teaching

I have over a decade of teaching experience and in that time I have worked with people of all ages and abilities to help them find a joy for singing and a freerer, more communicative sound.

I teach privately and have previousy taught for Hull University, Bradford Academy, RAM and Kings College London.

Concert performance

I have sung as soloist for much of the standard oratorio repertoire and my favourites include Elijah, Verdi Requiem and the Bach Passions. Rather than presenting these works as pictures at an exhibition, I like to perform even sacred litrugical works with expression and meaning.

I enjoy working with ensembles and am considered a collaborative force with a commitment to enfusing each musical endeavour with genuine joy.

Leeds Lieder

I am very proud to be the Learning and Participation Manager for Leeds Lieder.

Our work in schools and the wider community encourages people to engage with Art Song as a relevant and exciting genre, full of characters and stories!

Our award-winning schools projects connect with over 1,000 children per year. We also work with adults with profound learning disabilities and take song freely out to the wider public through pop up performances!

Workshop leading

I hugely enjoy working with singing groups of all ages and sizes!

Whether I'm working with an adult choir, a school group, a team building cohort or a bunch of people who had no idea they'd be singing; the name of the game is enjoyment and singing your heart out!

Phil is a Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music.

“Phil Wilcox’ Major General gave us a good humoured old cove with the lightning articulation in the patter song worthy of the best of Rossini
